Toe fungus is really toe nail fungs (Onychomycosis) because the fungus grows under the toe nail. The fungus itself is an anaerobic organisms which means it can only
survive in low oxygen environments and, if oxygen levels were to
increase, the fungus would die. It feeds on the keratin that makes up the surface of the toe
nail and it can spread from toe to toe. It is contagious and is usually spread in public areas like pools, hot tubes, sauna, showers etc.
There are other names for this same nail fungus and you may recognize them as Jock Itch, Athletes Foot or Tinea, this is the same infection fungus that causes all these issues.
There are four main types of Onychomycosis:
Distal subungual onychomycosis:
This is the nail fungus that grows under the nail on the nail bed and is the most common form of nail fungus seen by many of us. It turns the nail yellow, and the nail becomes thick with ruff edges. This can be treated with a proven nail fungus treatment.
White superficial onychomycosis:
This type is less common and is fungal
invasion of the top layers of the nail plate and appears as white spots on the nail plate. Accounts for only 10 percent of onychomycosis
cases. This can be treated with a proven nail fungus
treatment.
Proximal subungual onychomycosis:
This type of fungal
penetration is the least common of the onychomycosis family. The nail fungus appears as a white or
yellowish spot on the nail close to the cuticle. As it grows it can lift the nail off it's bed creating a flaking of the nail until it sheds completely. This can only be treated with systemic nail fungus treatment like Claripro.
Candidal onychomycosis:
Candida species
invade fingernails usually occurring in persons who frequently immerse their
hands in water. This normally requires the prior damage of the nail by
infection or trauma. This can only be treated with topical nail
fungus treatment like Zetaclear.
