Pseudomonas is a type of bacteria that infects the nail bed and appears to be a black nail but actually it's greenish colour if you look close. Red or black nails may result from a hematoma (a collection of blood) under the nail as a result of trauma like stubbing your toe or even an ingrown toenail.

There are different types of  medical conditions that can affect the appearance of the nails also.
